Top 3 essential nutrients

You may have heard a thing or two about essential nutrients. But do you know what it is exactly and why your body needs them?

If the answer is “no”, it might be worthwhile to explain.

Essential nutrients are compounds that your body can`t produce in sufficient quantity (if at all). The World Health Organization (WHO) advises that these nutrients should be consumed as part of a healthy diet.

Nevertheless, it`s still unclear what nutrients really are? Let`s be more specific here. Nutrients can be divided into two categories that are macronutrients and micronutrients.

Macronutrients give your body energy and are usually represented by protein, carbohydrates, and fat, whereas micronutrients are largely represented by vitamins and minerals.

But let`s provide a short overview of some of these nutrients:

1. Protein

Proteins provide the buildings block of the body. From muscle to cells, bones, skin, and infographic about Essential nutrients - proteins, fats, carbohydrateshair, proteins are important for your body. Since proteins are composed by different amino acids, your diet needs to deliver a variety of them for your body to function in the right way.

Healthy sources of protein? Fish, meat, eggs, beans, nuts, soy and others.

2. Carbohydrates

Carbohydrates are a vital compound for a healthy body. They give your body and central nervous system the necessary energy to perform its normal functions.

Healthy sources of carbohydrates? Whole grains, beans, fiber-rich vegetables and fruits. Some unhealthy sources include heavily refined goods.

3. Fats

Fats have had a bad reputation years ago, but some recent studies suggest that healthy fats are essential for your body. The Harvard Medical School writes in a publication that fats are a major source of energy that helps you absorb some vitamins and minerals, as well as a building block for cell membranes.

Healthy sources of fat? Nuts, seeds, fish, avocado and etc. Avoid trans fats that are produced industrially and present in packaged snack food, fast food and others.

The picture painted here is by no means full. Other essential nutrients include and are not limited to minerals, vitamins, and of course water.

Extra tip: It`s essential to stay hydrated. How to be sure? The color and volume of your urine may show – if it`s frequent and pale yellow, then you`ve had enough water.

Summing it all up, eating a varied diet that relies on fruits, vegetables, healthy proteins and fats, and whole grains may improve your health.

However, sometimes not all nutrients are absorbed properly by your body. Make regular medical checks and take digestive enzymes if prescribed by your doctor.
